Introduction
The Islamic Dilemma is not primarily an argument for Christianity. It is an internal critique of Islam. The argument asks whether the Quran can consistently affirm the authority of the Gospel while also contradicting its teachings.
The goal is not to attack Muslims. The goal is to encourage them to examine whether the Quran’s claims about previous revelation are logically coherent.
Short Summary
The Islamic Dilemma can be summarized in one sentence:
If the Gospel is trustworthy, Islam is false because it contradicts the Gospel. If the Gospel is corrupted, Islam is false because the Quran repeatedly affirms the Gospel’s authority.
Short 60-second version
- The Quran says Allah revealed the Torah and Gospel.
- The Quran says Christians should judge by the Gospel.
- The Gospel teaches that Jesus died, rose again, and is Lord.
- The Quran denies those teachings.
- Therefore either:
- The Gospel is true and Islam is false, or
- The Gospel is corrupted and the Quran is wrong for affirming it.
Start with Common Ground
Begin by asking questions rather than making accusations.
Ask:
- Do you believe the Quran is the perfect word of Allah?
- Do you believe Allah revealed the Torah and the Injil?
- Do you believe Allah’s words cannot fail or be corrupted?
Most Muslims will answer yes.
This establishes the foundation of the discussion.
Establish What the Quran Says
Show that the Quran repeatedly affirms earlier revelation.
Examples include:
- Surah 3:3-4 – Allah revealed the Torah and Injil.
- Surah 5:47 – Christians are commanded to judge by the Gospel.
- Surah 5:68 – Christians are told to stand upon the Torah and Gospel.
- Surah 10:94 – Muhammad is directed to ask those who read previous scriptures.
- Surah 18:27 – No one can change Allah’s words.
At this stage avoid discussing the Trinity, crucifixion, or textual criticism.
Simply establish that the Quran speaks positively about the Torah and Gospel.
Present the Dilemma
Once agreement is established, present the dilemma clearly.
Option One
The Gospel available to Christians is substantially reliable.
If that is true, then Christianity is true on major issues such as:
- Jesus died on the cross.
- Jesus rose from the dead.
- Jesus is Lord.
- Salvation comes through Christ.
These teachings contradict Islam.
Therefore Islam cannot be true.
Option Two
The Gospel available to Christians is corrupted.
If that is true, then the Quran creates serious problems because:
- It commands Christians to judge by the Gospel.
- It tells Christians to stand upon the Gospel.
- It speaks positively about the Gospel.
- It never clearly identifies when or how the Gospel became corrupted.
Therefore the Quran appears to affirm a corrupted book as divine guidance.
That would undermine the Quran’s reliability.
Keep the Focus on Jesus
Many discussions become sidetracked into manuscript history, church councils, or secondary issues.
Return continually to Jesus.
Ask:
- Did Jesus die on the cross?
- Did Jesus rise from the dead?
- Is Jesus merely a prophet or the Son of God?
- How are sins forgiven?
These are the questions that separate Christianity and Islam.
The Islamic Dilemma ultimately matters because the Quran presents a different Jesus from the Jesus found in the New Testament.
Common Muslim Responses
“The Injil Was a Different Book”
Ask:
- Where is this book?
- Who quoted it?
- Which Christians possessed it?
- What historical evidence exists for it?
The Quran appears to speak of a Gospel known by Christians during Muhammad’s lifetime.
“The Bible Was Corrupted”
Ask:
- When was it corrupted?
- Who corrupted it?
- Where is the uncorrupted version?
- Why does the Quran continue directing Christians to it?
The burden of proof rests on the person claiming corruption.
“The Quran Corrects Earlier Scriptures”
Ask:
- If earlier scriptures were corrupted, why does the Quran repeatedly affirm them?
- Why are Christians told to judge by them?
- Why are they called guidance and light?
The issue is not whether the Quran disagrees with the Bible. The issue is whether it can consistently affirm books that it contradicts.
Practical Advice
When presenting the Islamic Dilemma:
- Be respectful.
- Ask questions.
- Let the Muslim answer.
- Avoid mocking Muhammad or the Quran.
- Keep returning to the central dilemma.
- Focus on Jesus rather than winning arguments.
A calm five-minute presentation is usually more effective than a two-hour debate.
The Islamic Dilemma can be summarized in one sentence:
If the Gospel is trustworthy, Islam is false because it contradicts the Gospel. If the Gospel is corrupted, Islam is false because the Quran repeatedly affirms the Gospel’s authority.
The discussion ultimately leads to the person of Jesus Christ. The central question is not merely whether the Quran is consistent, but whether Jesus is who the Gospel says He is—the crucified, risen, and divine Savior who alone can reconcile sinners to God.
